The new Bobbili Blind School Buildings Blind School

Location: Bobbili - India

Fast Facts
What: A school for sight impaired children.
Where: Andhra Pradesh, India.
Why: Blindness is quite common in the area due to cultural norms relating to marrying within a family. Blindness is also poorly understood and blind children are often treated very badly.
How: The Blind School provides a comprehensive education for children who would normally receive none. Children are taught Braille as well as normal school subjects, many going on to tertiary level study.

The Bobbili Blind School for the sight impaired is situated in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. Its completion in 2004, meant our very excited blind children could move from their crowded, rented living quarters into a fabulous new school. ASI-an American association of businesses and lay ministries supportive of the SDA church, had generously raised the funds for the new complex.

The school really is amazing. It has been built large enough to take 350 children - we currently sponsor about 160. The classrooms, hostels, cafeteria, assembly halls and computer room are all under one roof. On the opening day the children came through the gate, walking with their hands on the shoulders of the child in front. They raised the Indian flag before entering their building for the opening program and a special meal.

Asian Aid provides talking Bibles for blind students
Ravi, a Blind School pupil, enjoys listening to his talking Bible

The computer lab is a very popular place. Their new computers talk to them, tell them which key they have pressed and books can be scanned and then the computer will read to the children either fast or slow. Gaining computer literacy skills may make all the difference for children who would normally have very limited opportunities, and like all children they are excited to experiment with technology.

The new complex also includes six duplex buildings for staff housing and another for visitors.
