Kollegal School for the Hearing and Speech Impaired Deaf School

Location: Kollegal - India

Fast Facts
What: A school for deaf and speech impaired children.
Where: Kollegal, India.
Why: Deafness is quite common in the area due to cultural norms relating to marrying within a family. Deafness is also poorly understood and deaf children are often subjected to prejudice and reduced opportunities.
How: Sign language is taught along with other ordinary school subjects. Vocational training is also taught to the older children, including tailoring and computer skills.

Children with hearing impairments are very special to us!

Despite their enormous potential, they often experience prejudice, discrimination and fewer opportunities. Many struggle just to survive. As children they are often valued less and as adults in India they may be regarded as paying the consequences for a previous evil life!

The Kollegal School for the Hearing and Speech Impaired, based in Kollegal, India continues to grow. We now have the capacity to accommodate over 150 students. There are currently over 100 at the school. It is a handsome building, well constructed and surrounded by fertile vegetable gardens.

Sewing classes have recently begun. We want to teach computer skills, too. This would be very good for deaf children. We are told, with a smile, that some employers like hiring the deaf for data entry and computing because they are not easily distracted in the workplace.

All donations are tax deductible.
